A V Palaniswamy – How One Man came-saw-conquered and contributed to India’s Foundry Landscape!

In the Landscape of Documenting India’s Foundry History, few names stand as tall or as quietly influential as A. V. Palaniswamy, the Founder of National Fittings Limited.

Born in Tamil Nadu and later becoming a U.S. citizen during his higher studies abroad, Mr. Palaniswamy built a legacy that bridged continents – quite literally, mentioning to me that he lived in about 8 or 9 Countries during his early Professional life.

Chasing Opportunity & Finding it

His journey began with a decade long career in the United States, where he worked with a manufacturing company until 1978.

During these years, he was introduced to a then emerging technology The Grooved Pipe Couplings – a revolutionary method for joining pipes used in firefighting systems and major infrastructure projects, that still decades later is a Blue Ocean for the firm.

Recognizing the potential of this innovation in 1978 and sensing a massive opportunity, he made a bold decision and ventured out on his own, setting the foundation for what would eventually become National Fittings Limited.

In the early years, production relied heavily on outsourcing both for castings and the rubber gaskets needed for assemblies. But Mr. Palaniswamy’s long term vision extended far beyond trading or assembling. He saw India not just as a home, but as fertile ground for building a world-class, vertically integrated manufacturing base.

Back to Roots – India

In 1980, he picked his hometown Tamil Nadu to set up his own foundry, a bold move at a time when the Indian foundry landscape was still extremely nascent, fragmented, and largely manual.

It was at this time that he began introducing his innovations that would transform Indian foundry practices.

Asked if he would do it again however, given the Bureaucracy prevailing in India at the time, he politely nodded. Today, India has changed.

Ductile Iron – In 1980?

The original designs of the Couplings were in Malleable iron, however to avoid the costly process of Heat Treatment, Mr. Palaniswamy set his focus on Ductile Iron.

Back in the early 1980s, Ductile Iron itself in India seemed like an innovation. Mastering the Grooved Couplings in Graphite Iron was a process that took him 2 Years of Blood, Sweat and Tears to accomplish.

The Effort paid off eventually and this development dramatically reduced cost, increased mechanical performance, and global competitiveness, setting a new benchmark in the Indian pipe-joining industry.

Pioneering Thin-Walled Ductile Iron Castings

At a time when even basic ductile iron production was a challenge for many Indian foundries, he pushed the boundaries further by producing thin-walled ductile iron castings.

This required complex metallurgical understanding and process control far ahead of what most local facilities were equipped for, most of his Equipment was imported into India.

This capability opened the doors for more complex, lightweight, high-strength castings and thus helping Indian manufacturers compete internationally.

Introducing Tube Inoculation Technology to India

It was during a visit to Norway, Mr. Palaniswamy encountered Tube Inoculation, a metallurgical technique used to achieve consistent ductile iron chemistry and improved mechanical properties.

Realizing its potential, he brought this technology to India, becoming one of the earliest adopters and promoters of this process in the country.

Tube inoculation played a key role in enhancing casting quality, reducing defects, and ensuring repeatability, strengthening the foundation of his growing foundry.

Listing on the Bombay Stock Exchange :

All these accomplishments meant that the Company prospered and so during the gold rush days of the 1990s, National Fittings eventually went Public cementing its position as a global leader with a strong international reputation.

Asked if listing affected his quick decision making ability, He said since he always did the best for the Firm, Stakeholders didn’t seem to mind too much, although he mentioned that in hindsight he would have gone public only for a much larger investment.

Where is National Fittings Today?

Today, the ‘National’ Brand is preferred choice Internationally for not only pioneering Grooved Couplings, but maintaining strict adherence to Quality parameters from a safety standpoint.

Infact, Mr Palaniswamy says that their failure rate has to be even lesser than Automotive Components, being in the business of Fire Fighting Equipment, where lives matter.

Mr Jayaram who’s currently Managing the Company Today mentions that on Average, National Fittings ships 25 Containers a Month, But don’t trust me, I have an Images for Proof!

Still Tap dancing to work in his 80s

Today, National Fittings Ltd is recognised worldwide for quality grooved fittings, castings, and allied products. And even in his eighties, Mr. A. V. Palaniswamy continues to walk into his office every day, driven not by obligation, but by passion.

His journey stands as an enduring inspiration, and his innovations have left a permanent mark on the Indian foundry industry.

And for that, We are Grateful!
